Once everyone has their 2 hole cards, the first round of betting begins. This is initiated by 2 mandatory bets called “blinds” that are placed in the pot by the two players to the left of the dealer. This creates an incentive for players to play, as the winner of the pot gets all the money bet during that round.
When it is your turn, you can either check (pass), call or raise. Checking means you’re passing the round and forfeiting your chance to win. Calling means you’re matching the previous player’s bet, and raising means you want to increase it.
The final card is then dealt face up – this is the “river”. There is a final round of betting, and after all players have revealed their cards, the showdown happens. The player with the best 5 card poker hand wins the pot! In the event of a tie, the dealer wins. If there is no one with a winning hand, the kitty is shared equally among all players who remain in the game.
