The Basics of Poker

In poker, players reveal their cards in a betting round, and whoever has the best hand wins the pot. There are many different types of poker games, but all share a few basic rules. Players can also improve their hands by bluffing, although this is risky and requires good timing and a deep understanding of the game.

A hand is made up of five cards. A pair is two matching cards of the same rank, a straight is 5 consecutive cards of the same suit (or 2 suits), and a flush is any combination of 3 or more matching cards of the same rank. A full house is three matching cards of one rank, plus two pairs, and a straight flush is any four consecutive cards of the same suit.

Each player starts with two starting cards, called hole cards or blinds. The player to the left of the button takes their turn, and can either call the current bet, raise the current bet, or fold their cards face down without putting any chips in (fold). The player to their right then acts.

If a player’s initial cards don’t look strong, it’s often better to check and let someone else take the action, rather than continuing to bet money at a weak hand. However, if your initial cards are strong, you can bet aggressively in order to force weaker hands out of the pot and maximise the value of your winnings.
